INTELLIGENT MICROFILM from UNINTELLIGENT Raster Images

2011-SEPTEMBER:

Have I been struck by Lightning?

It certainly feels like it, as I have just experienced the most SHOCKINGLY DELIGHTFUL awakening. What is that you ask?

I have just downloaded the Beta Version of the e-ImageData Corp’s ScanPro 2000 INTELLIGENT MICROFILM from UNINTELLIGENT Raster Images PowerScan Productivity Suite – PPS software [ Patent Pending ] while exhibiting at the ALIA National Library & Information Technicians Conference 2011 Monday 12 to Friday 16 September 2011 at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Perth.

Why was I so SHOCKED?

This was my first exposure to the greatest breakthrough in Micrographic History since the 1920′s when a Banker in New York invented a camera that would make a positive record of cheques that were returned to depositors or forwarded to other banks.

What did this mean?

Principally, that the bank could maintain a legal record of transactions, economically and quickly.

It meant new security for records.

It meant that time-consuming handwritten descriptions of cheques would have to be made no longer.

The banker’s name was George McCarthy, and he deserves a high place of honour in the history of microfilm.

Fast forward today with the imminent release of the e-ImageData Corp. ScanPro 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader – Viewer – Scanner – Printer – PowerScan Productivity Suite – PPS – INTELLIGENT MICROFILM from UNINTELLIGENT Raster Images – software [ Patent Pending ] in the next few weeks & HEY PRESTO another EARTH SHATTERING development in the History of Micrographics with the introduction of INTELLIGENT MICROFILM from UNINTELLIGENT Raster Images.

YES, that is what I said the introduction of INTELLIGENT MICROFILM from UNINTELLIGENT Raster Images.

In recent weeks Canon Japan Head Office has announced their decision to cease the manufacture of Microfilm Equipment because of the continued shift towards electronic document capture solutions and the decline in demand for micrographics equipment.

At the same time as Canon Japan Head Office makes this announcement e-ImageData Corp. has, over the past FIVE - 5 years installed several thousand of the ScanPro 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader – Viewer – Scanner – Printers & the earlier version the ScanPro 1000 Digital Microfilm Reader – Viewer – Scanner – Printer in Libraries Internationally.

No wonder Canon Japan has experienced a decline in demand for micrographics equipment.

Not because there is no demand for micrographics equipment but because of the superiority of the ongoing & every continuing technological improvements being made by Jim Westoby & Todd Kahle of e-ImageData Corp. with the ScanPro 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader – Viewer – Scanner – Printer.

I wrote an article back in March 2008 entitled 2007 – A watershed year for the Micrographic / Imaging Industry regarding the then ScanPro 1000 Digital Microfilm Reader – Viewer – Scanner – Printer & available for review with a copy of the article @ 2007 – A watershed year for the Micrographic / Imaging Industry – March 2008.

With this introduction of the e-ImageData Corp. – INTELLIGENT MICROFILM from UNINTELLIGENT Raster Images – software – Patent Pending via the release of the e-ImageData Corp’s ScanPro 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader – Viewer – Scanner – Printer – PowerScan Productivity Suite – PPS software [ Patent Pending ] an EARTH SHATTERING change has occurred in the Microfilm Industry.

2010-AUGUST: What some Local Family Historians and Genealogists plus other Researchers at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration ( NARA ) located at 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20740-6001 in the National Capital in Washington DC are saying. ScanPro 2000 all but one was positive.

NOTE: This equates to a 93% vote by the respondents in favour of the Features, Benefits & Capabilities provided by the e-Image Data’s – ScanPro 2000. Researchers acknowledged that the machine takes time to learn but they really liked using the machine once they understood the program.

The “Spot-Edit” function was a hit with both staff and researchers. The only downside is the lack of an “Undo” function. Unfortunately, we did not get many surveys back for the ST ViewScan.

Researchers agreed that the machine was good, but they preferred the e-Image Data’s ScanPro 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer.

One researcher, who used the ST ViewScan machine for about a week, told us that the machine would freeze and she would lose all of her scanned images.

We also had a problem saving images with the ST ViewScan machine, but that was fixed by saving the images as a different file type.

2010-JULY: What some Local Family Historians and Genealogists in North America are saying on the internet about the e-Image Data ScanPro model 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer.

Posted by: Daniel Mandan – July 09, 2010 I had reported early last year that the Archives of Ontario had equipped their new library on the York University campus with SEVENTY FOUR – 74 ScanPro 2000′s ( they just added an additional ScanPro 2000 bringing the total to SEVENTY FIVE – 75 units ).

I have had an opportunity to use those scanners and they are amazing.

They are fast, easy to use and the powerful software controls makes it easy to complete look-ups quickly.

Genealogy groups rent buses to go there and use the equipment and the controls on the ScanPro are so intuitive those researchers just sit down and start using the equipment with little or no instruction.

Posted by: Polly-July 13, 2010:

I have used the ST Imaging ST200X that Jim is referring to and it was not even close to the performance of the ScanPro 2000.

It took more than 1 minute to scan an image vs. 1 second for the ScanPro 2000 and the end result was of lower quality.

I am quite certain that the actual document resolution is not the 3600 DPI that the manufacturer ST Imaging claims.

To get started there were 5 switches that needed to be turned on.

With significant frustration and help I did finally get it up and running.

Once running, I had to switch back and forth from view mode to computer mode before a scan could be made.

This switching back and forth is very confusing and slows microfilm genealogy research to a point even slower than the old reader / printers.

Scans of a newspaper made directly to the SD card, with the exception of the headlines, were unreadable.

I understand that e-ImageData, the manufacturer of the ScanPro 2000, will provide a trade in allowance for those unfortunate souls who purchased the ST200X.

Some of Australia’s major State Libraries & Universities, both nationally & internationally have already made that decision with their selection of the e-Image Data ScanPro model 2000 for installation in their respective institutions. SEE THE DETAILS BELOW

2009-November:

A Man of Many Talents – Peter Collins The full text of this article – A Man of Many Talents – Peter Collins – appeared on pages 123 – 125 of the September 2009 edition of Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly.

Its author is Roberta (“Bobbi”) King.

Revolutionary Access to Research Material a new feather in the cap of Garrison Communications came this year when it was appointed an Authorised Agent in the Greater Brisbane Metropolitan Area for the e-Image Data Small Footprint Desktop ScanPro model 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer or Reader / Printer with the ability to read, view, scan & print from 16 / 35 mm Roll Microfilm, Microfiche, 35 mm Aperture Card/s for Engineering Drawing/s, Map/s & Plan/s – either negative or positive, plus Micro Opaque/s – e.g. Microcard/s or Microprint/s. Peter believes these devices have the potential to revolutionise access to under – used research material locked away inside the microfiche and microfilm sections of the world’s public libraries and genealogical society archives, especially local newspapers and parish registers.

Peter says, “The e-Image Data Small Footprint Desktop ScanPro model 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer or Reader / Printer with the ability to read, view, scan & print from 16 / 35 mm Roll Microfilm, Microfiche, 35 mm Aperture Card/s for Engineering Drawing/s, Map/s & Plan/s – either negative or positive, plus Micro Opaque/s – e.g. Microcard/s or Microprint/s is a portable, multi-tasking technology capable of giving individuals or teams of collaborating researchers a tool to unlock vast categories of microforms including shipping lists, monumental inscriptions, Map/s and ephemera – and turn it all into the language of the 21st Century: Digital.

Once freed from its microform prison, digitised data can be readily inspected, collated, manipulated into indexes and then distributed to other researchers. “Digitisation undoubtedly is exponentially democratising for genealogical and local history research; and volunteer – run organisations everywhere are beginning to discover the commercial opportunities presented by indexing material that has, for centuries, proven too unwieldy, obscure or otherwise impractical for historians to critically analyse.

This is the most exciting development in genealogy since the invention of the personal computer – and you can quote me!”

University of Wollongong Library – Testimonial The University of Wollongong Library purchased two of the e-Image Data Small Footprint Desktop ScanPro model 1000 Scanners from Wollongong Drawing and Office Equipment – WD&OE in 2008.

The University have been very happy with the purchase. Wollongong Drawing and Office Equipment – WD&OE was extremely responsive with competitive quotes and sourcing state-of-the-art replacements for our aging Canon Reader / Printers; WD&OE strongly recommended these scanners because they were cost-effective, and had all the functionality ( and more ) that we were after.

Wollongong Drawing and Office Equipment – WD&OE were prompt to visit, provide advice and then install the new units.

The big advantage these ScanPro units have over our previous Canon Reader / Printer equipment is the compactness of the solution, the range of microform formats handled, and the elimination of fiddly adjustments to lenses, apertures, and orientation of the lenses; all of which make the units much easier to use with little or no training. The ScanPro 2000 microfilm/fiche printer has arrived and you can now quickly obtain a print of microfiche and film records relating to your family. Our Vice President, Paul Mann has been busy organising the installation. Thank you Paul. Thanks also to Christine Smith who has done some rearrangement of the Resource Centre to accommodate our new state of the art technology. Christine Smith and Elaine Lucas ran a very successful session on “Treasures in the GSQ Library” in July. I attended and learnt a lot. Thanks to Christine and Elaine. They are planning to do another session with Don Fraser presenting on maps held in the Resource Centre on Saturday 31 October. The cost is only $5.00. I can recommend the session, as I am sure that you will learn more about our “Treasures”. Also our annual seminar is being held on Saturday 29 August at the Queen Alexandra Home at Coorparoo. The topic is Trades and Professions. Elaine Cooper has developed a great program. I hope many of you take the opportunity to come along, support the Society and learn more about your ancestors’ trades and professions. That’s all for this month.
