Improved Scanning Productivity at the National Library of Australia – NLA using an SMA model A 2 Book Scanners

2012 – FEBRUARY

An article posted to the National Library of Australia – NLA Behind the Scenes BLOG by Denyl Cloughley of the NLA titled Digitising Symphony Australia’s concert itineraries – Capturing of the Symphony Australia collection of concert touring schedules and artist itineraries.

The article Digitising Symphony Australia’s concert itineraries – Capturing of the Symphony Australia collection of concert touring schedules and artist itineraries is available online for review @

Throughout the process, the NLA scanning personnel were able to keep in mind some bigger picture questions, such as impacts on their capacity and consideration of extending the use of these SMA model A 2 size Book & Fragile Document Scanning devices to non-music items.

The article details the Considerable efficiencies gained by using the SMA model A 2 size Book & Fragile Document Scanners for this Capturing of the Symphony Australia collection of concert touring schedules and artist itineraries project.

Scans produced on the SMA model A 2 size Book & Fragile Document Scanners took less than 1 minute per page compared to the Kodak Creo IQ Scanners which took 5 minutes per page to scan.

The SMA model A 2 size Book & Fragile Document Scanners also have the option of using a foot pedal instead of a mouse to raise and lower the scanning head.

We tried the foot pedal and quite liked it.

Obviously this Hands Free feature also added further improvements to the efficiency of the scanning project with increased productivity being the result.

The SMA model A 2 size Book & Fragile Document Scanners are capable of scanning single book pages up to A 3 = 297 x 420 mm in size and or with the book open up to A 2  420 x 594 mm in size plus flat or fragile paper document items up to A 2 = 420 x 594 mm in size.

From their testing of the SMA model A 2 size Book & Fragile Document Scanners with the Capturing of the Symphony Australia collection of concert touring schedules and artist itineraries scanning project the NLA scanning personnel discovered that the SMA model A 2 size Book & Fragile Document Scanners would work well scanning books and magazines and any other text based material – in large volumes.
