Digging up skeletons: To the delight of the local history and family history enthusiasts the Bombala Library now has a local history and family history collection. The Bombala district is very rich in history and with the growing trend of people taking an active part in local history and family history, the Bombala Library is placed in an excellent position to assist people with their enquiries. Funding was sought from the Library Development Grant program to develop a core collection of print, microform and electronic material that would ensure the material is easily accessible within the community. The successful funding application provided the opportunity to undertake this project. The jewel in the crown was the purchase of the ScanPro 300 Digital Scanner and microfilm copies of the local paper, the Bombala Times from 1899 to 2005 with a subscription for annual updates. This alone has proved to be a very popular and valuable resource, with many residents, including councillors, trawling through old newspaper articles. The project resulted in partnerships being formed with members of the Bombala and District Historical Society. This has enabled the library to develop a database of all resources held by both
the Library and the Historical Society. In addition it ensures that resources are shared rather than duplicated. Bombala Council’s Mayor, Councillor Bob
Stewart, officially launched the collection on Saturday 2nd June. The launch was well supported by the community with over 30 people attending
the morning tea. The launch was followed a workshop on tracing your family. Over 25 people participated and were taken through the basics and then the wonderful word of resources available to assist in this addictive pastime. A lovely lunch of chicken and sweet corn soup, fresh bread rolls, chicken wings, mini quiches and sandwiches was enjoyed by all. Many family history stories were shared and at times there was lively discussions and I must say debate.
The feedback from the community has been excellent and certainly very positive. I can see the partnerships formed will only becoming stronger. Lyn Goucher
Library Manager Monaro Regional Library & Information Service.
