2010 - AUGUST - What some Local Family Historians and Genealogists plus other Researchers at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) located at 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20740-6001 in the National Capital in Washington DC are saying.
Based on completed surveys, researchers prefer the e-Image Data’s - ScanPro2000 / ScanPro 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer to that of the S-T Imaging’s ST ViewScan.
Of the 14 survey responses received from researchers on the e-Image Data’s - ScanPro2000 all but one was positive. NOTE: This equates to a 93% vote by the respondents in favour of the Features, Benefits & Capabilities provided by the e-Image Data’s - ScanPro2000.
Researchers acknowledged that the machine takes time to learn but they really liked using the machine once they understood the program.
The “Spot-Edit” function was a hit with both staff and researchers. The only downside is the lack of an “Undo” function.
Unfortunately, we did not get many surveys back for the ST ViewScan. Researchers agreed that the machine was good,but they preferred the e-Image Data’s ScanPro2000 / ScanPro 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer.
One researcher, who used the ST ViewScan machine for about a week, told us that the machine would freeze and she would lose all of her scanned images.
We also had a problem saving images with the ST ViewScan machine, but that was fixed by saving the images as a different file type.

I had reported early last year that the Archives of Ontario had equipped their new library on the York University campus with SEVENTY FOUR [74] ScanPro 2000's (they just added an additional ScanPro 2000 bringing the total to SEVENTY FIVE [75] units).
I have had an opportunity to use those scanners and they are amazing. They are fast, easy to use and the powerful software controls makes it easy to complete look-ups quickly.
Genealogy groups rent buses to go there and use the equipment and the controls on the ScanPro are so intuitive those researchers just sit down and start using the equipment with little or no instruction.

I have used the ST Imaging ST200X that Jim is referring to and it was not even close to the performance of the ScanPro 2000.
It took more than 1 minute to scan an image vs. 1 second for the ScanPro 2000 and the end result was of lower quality.
I am quite certain that the actual document resolution is not the 3600 dpi that the manufacturer ST Imaging claims.
To get started there were 5 switches that needed to be turned on.
With significant frustration and help I did finally get it up and running. Once running, I had to switch back and forth from view mode to computer mode before a scan could be made.
This switching back and forth is very confusing and slows microfilm genealogy research to a point even slower than the old reader / printers.
Scans of a newspaper made directly to the SD card, with the exception of the headlines, were unreadable.
I understand that e-ImageData, the manufacturer of the ScanPro 2000, will provide a trade in allowance for those unfortunate souls who purchased the ST200X.
Some of Australia’s major State Libraries & Universities, both nationally & internationally have already made that decision with their selection of the e-Image Data ScanPro model 2000 / ScanPro2000 / ScanPro 2000 for installation in their respective institutions.

WORD-SEARCH FUNCTION FOR MICROFILM DEBUTED BY e-IMAGE DATA
HARTFORD, Wis. – e-Image Data debuted the beta version of its new WORD-Search™, technology at the American Library Association convention in Chicago in July. A new function for the popular ScanPro 2000, WORD-Search™ allows users to find selected words on any type of microform.
WORD-Search™, is the first software of its type to be developed for searching topics within microfilm documents. The ScanPro 2000 first scans the microfilm image viewed on the screen then analyzes the scan for word matches.
“The user enters the key words for the microfilm image of interest and clicks the WORD-Search™ button,” says James Westoby, president, e-Image Data. “The software then highlights any matches for the specified words, similar to the way Microsoft Word’s “find” function does for Word documents.” The final result is the complete microfilm image on the viewing screen displaying the word matches.
“The ScanPro 2000 is widely used by libraries and researchers across the world and WORD-Search™ was developed as a response to customer feedback,” says Westoby. “Our customers can now easily search and locate birth, obituary, and marriage records as well as newspaper articles stored on microfilm.”
Millions of valuable documents, including rare source materials and government documents stored on microfilm, exist in libraries throughout the world. Librarians who tried the beta version of WORD-Search™ at the ALA show were excited about the possibilities.

Our researchers LOVE them. The distinctive rectangular monitor is really helpful when viewing newspaper pages on microfilm. I have not used the other model since it came out in Beta, so not fair of me to compare. We also have 2 Minolta MS6000 scanners. Some of our users remain loyal to that type of scanner.

Relatively easy to figure out how to use and patrons / students / faculty like them. Good quality prints, etc. Finally we can make copies of our microprint cards. Haven't used the other, so I can only recommend the ScanPro1000. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you choose it.

We start this newsletter with the great news - the new Microfilm Scanner/Printer and monitor has been purchased and installed so we can now offer reliable printing from microfilms and microfiche again. Training sessions for library volunteers are being arranged so please be patient whilst we all learn all the new functions of the machine. Hi everyone
It has been a busy month at GSQ. The ScanPro 2000 microfilm/fiche printer has arrived and you can now quickly obtain a print of microfiche and film records relating to your family. Our Vice President, Paul Mann has been busy organising the installation. Thank you Paul. Thanks also to Christine Smith who has done some rearrangement of the Resource Centre to accommodate our new state of the art technology.
Christine Smith and Elaine Lucas ran a very successful session on “Treasures in the GSQ Library” in July. I attended and learnt a lot. Thanks to Christine and Elaine. They are planning to do another session with Don Fraser presenting on maps held in the Resource Centre on Saturday 31 October. The cost is only $5.00. I can recommend the session, as I am sure that you will learn more about our “Treasures”.
Also our annual seminar is being held on Saturday 29 August at the Queen Alexandra Home at Coorparoo. The topic is Trades and Professions. Elaine Cooper has developed a great program. I hope many of you take the opportunity to come along, support the Society and learn more about your ancestors’ trades and professions.
