2010 - JULY - What some Local Family Historians and Genealogists in North America are saying on the internet about the e-Image Data ScanPro model 2000 / ScanPro2000 / ScanPro 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer.

Posted by: Daniel Mandan - July 09, 2010

I had reported early last year that the Archives of Ontario had equipped their new library on the York University campus with SEVENTY FOUR [74] ScanPro 2000's (they just added an additional ScanPro 2000 bringing the total to SEVENTY FIVE [75] units).

I have had an opportunity to use those scanners and they are amazing. They are fast, easy to use and the powerful software controls makes it easy to complete look-ups quickly.

Genealogy groups rent buses to go there and use the equipment and the controls on the ScanPro are so intuitive those researchers just sit down and start using the equipment with little or no instruction.

Posted by: Polly - July 13, 2010

I have used the ST Imaging ST200X that Jim is referring to and it was not even close to the performance of the ScanPro 2000.

It took more than 1 minute to scan an image vs. 1 second for the ScanPro 2000 and the end result was of lower quality.

I am quite certain that the actual document resolution is not the 3600 dpi that the manufacturer ST Imaging claims.

To get started there were 5 switches that needed to be turned on.

With significant frustration and help I did finally get it up and running. Once running, I had to switch back and forth from view mode to computer mode before a scan could be made.

This switching back and forth is very confusing and slows microfilm genealogy research to a point even slower than the old reader / printers.

Scans of a newspaper made directly to the SD card, with the exception of the headlines, were unreadable.

I understand that e-ImageData, the manufacturer of the ScanPro 2000, will provide a trade in allowance for those unfortunate souls who purchased the ST200X.

Some of Australia’s major State Libraries & Universities, both nationally & internationally have already made that decision with their selection of the e-Image Data ScanPro model 2000 / ScanPro2000 / ScanPro 2000 for installation in their respective institutions.

2009 - November - A Man of Many Talents - Peter Collins

The full text of this article - A Man of Many Talents - Peter Collins - appeared on pages 123 - 125 of the September 2009 edition of Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly. Its author is Roberta (“Bobbi”) King.

Revolutionary Access to Research Material

A new feather in the cap of Garrison Communications came this year when it was appointed an Authorised Agent in the Greater Brisbane Metropolitan Area for e-Image Data's ScanPro 2000 digital micrographic reader / viewer / scanner / printer. Peter believes these devices have the potential to revolutionise access to under - used research material locked away inside the microfiche and microfilm sections of the world's public libraries and genealogical society archives, especially local newspapers and parish registers.

Peter says, “The ScanPro 2000 is a portable, multi-tasking technology capable of giving individuals or teams of collaborating researchers a tool to unlock vast categories of microforms including shipping lists, monumental inscriptions, maps and ephemera – and turn it all into the language of the 21st Century: Digital. Once freed from its microform prison, digitised data can be readily inspected, collated, manipulated into indexes and then distributed to other researchers.

“Digitisation undoubtedly is exponentially democratising for genealogical and local history research; and volunteer - run organisations everywhere are beginning to discover the commercial opportunities presented by indexing material that has, for centuries, proven too unwieldy, obscure or otherwise impractical for historians to critically analyse. This is the most exciting development in genealogy since the invention of the personal computer – and you can quote me!”

University of Wollongong Library - Testimonial

The University of Wollongong Library purchased two ScanPro model 1000 Scanners from Wollongong Drawing and Office Equipment - WD&OE in 2008.

The University have been very happy with the purchase.

Wollongong Drawing and Office Equipment - WD&OE was extremely responsive with competitive quotes and sourcing state-of-the-art replacements for our aging Canon Reader / Printers; WD&OE strongly recommended these scanners because they were cost-effective, and had all the functionality (and more) that we were after.

Wollongong Drawing and Office Equipment - WD&OE were prompt to visit, provide advice and then install the new units.

The big advantage these units have over our previous Canon Reader / Printer equipment is the compactness of the solution, the range of microform formats handled, and the elimination of fiddly adjustments to lenses, apertures, and orientation of the lenses; all of which make the units much easier to use with little or no training.

Cheers, Neil Cairns - Associate Librarian, Technology Library - University of Wollongong NSW 2522 Australia.

WORD-SEARCH FUNCTION FOR MICROFILM DEBUTED BY e-IMAGE DATA

HARTFORD, Wis. – e-Image Data debuted the beta version of its new WORD-Search™, technology at the American Library Association convention in Chicago in July. A new function for the popular ScanPro 2000, WORD-Search™ allows users to find selected words on any type of microform.

WORD-Search™, is the first software of its type to be developed for searching topics within microfilm documents. The ScanPro 2000 first scans the microfilm image viewed on the screen then analyzes the scan for word matches.

“The user enters the key words for the microfilm image of interest and clicks the WORD-Search™ button,” says James Westoby, president, e-Image Data. “The software then highlights any matches for the specified words, similar to the way Microsoft Word’s “find” function does for Word documents.” The final result is the complete microfilm image on the viewing screen displaying the word matches.

“The ScanPro 2000 is widely used by libraries and researchers across the world and WORD-Search™ was developed as a response to customer feedback,” says Westoby. “Our customers can now easily search and locate birth, obituary, and marriage records as well as newspaper articles stored on microfilm.”

Millions of valuable documents, including rare source materials and government documents stored on microfilm, exist in libraries throughout the world. Librarians who tried the beta version of WORD-Search™ at the ALA show were excited about the possibilities.

“The university librarians that we talked with at ALA were very enthusiastic about WORD-Search™” says Westoby. “Students could use the WORD-Search™ function for their research and would no longer have to read the entire page to find relevant entries. It will reduce enormously the amount of time they need to spend going through microfilm documents and also free up the machines for other users.”

WORD-Search™ also has the potential to be used by educators and libraries to locate and select content on microfilm to be made available online. “This software could revolutionize the way microfilm is used for research”, says Westoby. “It will open the door for a whole new level of accessibility and information sharing.”

E-Image Data received excellent feedback on the beta version of the software from the ALA attendees and we are refining its features in anticipation of a product launch before the end of the year. WORD-Search™ works with any ScanPro 2000.

Pre-launch orders will be accepted beginning November 23.

While visiting Toronto, Ontario earlier in July, I took the opportunity to visit the Ontario Archives / York University of Canada - Rotunda Alexander Fraser Microfilm Reading Room. A photo of the new Archives of Ontario building is show at the web site listed below.

Visiting the Archives of Ontario

What a SIGHT to view SEVENTY FOUR, yes [74] now SEVENTY FIVE [75] as of July 2010 ScanPro2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printers with the ability to read, view, scan & print from microfilm, microfiche, aperture cards & micro opaques e.g. microcards or microprints - THE RELIABLE ONE sitting in rows of up to 15 machines in line with large format 24 inch & lesser size monitors in one room.

I was overwhelmed at the view but was unable to obtain permission to take a photograph of the installation.

As stated, the Alexander Fraser Microfilm Reading Room is called the Rotunda & is a massive round room with only microfilm equipment located on every desk, side by side.

There are several older model Minolta Reader Scanner Printers, one [1] only MS6000 & four [4] only MS7000 sitting together along with fourteen large format down projection readers. These older pieces of microfilm equipment looked totally out of place in this High Tech ScanPro2000 Micrographic environment.
