2007- December - The ScanPro1000 / ScanPro 1000 with its latest release of the PowerScan Software Version 2.0 has now has the added capability to automatically scan roll microfilm [16 mm, 35 mm and (3M) cartridge 16 mm roll microfilm (requires a UCC250 carrier)] as an option extra at an addition charge. The optional Auto-Scan™ plug-in to the ScanPro1000 / ScanPro 1000 software adds a button right to the standard toolbar that adds automatic, unattended scanning capability to any ScanPro1000 / ScanPro 1000 with a motorized roll microfilm carrier and (3M) cartridge 16 mm roll microfilm (requires a UCC250 carrier). Auto-Scan™ provides for automatic naming of scans, and you can start scanning at the beginning or anywhere within the roll of film and scan to the end or you can specify the number of scans that will be completed before stopping, plus the system can specify the file type (JPEG, PDF, TIFF, TIFF compressed, & TIFF G4). May 2007 - Digital Microfilm Equipment - DME the Australasian Distributors for the ScanPro range of micrographic readers / viewers, scanners / printers have pleasure in announcing the release of the new and enhanced ease of use software operational features to their latest and greatest product, the ScanPro model 1000 Microfilm Viewer, Scanner - to - PC & Printer - THE COMPLETE DIGITAL SOLUTION. The ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 is ably managed by the very powerful PowerScan Software as shown & demonstrated at the recent AIIM On Demand 2007 show in Boston in April 2007

HARTFORD, Wisconsin USA – e-Image Data Corporation announced the release of the productivity plus updates to the popular PowerScan software for the ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 microfilm scanner. “The addition of these software features are the result of feedback and suggestions from our customers”, says James Westoby, president, e-Image Data. The new features include customizable tool bars, storage and recall of application settings, secure screen mode, multi-page file formats, and support for multiple languages. “These new software features continue our focus on simplicity and ease-of-use and will be available to all ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 users at no charge”, says Jim Westoby.

The ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 is the all-in-one microfilm viewer, scanner and printer that uses cutting - edge digital technology and innovative design to provide quick, easy-to-use functionality in a unit that takes up as much space on a desk as one sheet of A3 = 297 x 420 mm size paper & is only 180 mm in height . In addition to the many standard features like automatic focus, exposure control, digital and optical image rotation, the ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 provides features that are just not available with any other microfilm equipment:

The high-resolution power zoom lens of the ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 covers 7X to 54X applications. This means that you never have to stop your look-ups to change lenses.

The ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 scans a high resolution image of your microfilm in one second, while competing models clock in at six seconds, some models much more. This fast, compact, desktop unit also uses less power than the competition: just 19 watts vs. up to 350 watts, good news for those who are looking for ways to decrease unnecessary electricity consumption.

The ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 utilizes a high-speed video capture scan process. This means that the image on the computer monitor moves at the same time as the film, eliminating the annoying lag, typical with competitive units. And, the entire microfilm image is always on the computer monitor at high resolution allowing the user to easily make changes to the image and capture exactly with is seen on the monitor.

“Our customers are faced with ever-increasing needs for their available space,” says Westoby. “The ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 unit’s small size and reduced weight allows it to be used almost anywhere and to be moved easily should the need arise.” Other units on the market can weigh more than a 100 lbs., while the ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 weighs just 19 lbs. and can be moved easily by one person.

The high resolution scan image is further enhanced with the addition of image filters, which automatically remove background “static,” thereby enhancing and sharpening the image.

The release of these latest software updates means that the ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 fits well into both public use applications where limited features and secure screen operation are important and, also, into document delivery applications where full features are required, and every application in between says Westoby.

When asked what is planned next for the ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 Westoby says, “the plan is to release unattended scanning at the end of third quarter this year. This will be a low cost solution for converting information stored on microfilm to digital images.”

April 2007 - An insight into what people had to say about Digital Microfilm Scanning Equipment exhibited at the Association of College and Resource Libraries 13th National Conference March 29 – April 1, 2007 Baltimore, Maryland

Here is a quote from - The LIBRARY MEMO - An internal news blog about the Library for UMD Library staff. In a post on the news blog this is what one attendee at the Association of College and Resource Libraries 13th National Conference - March 29 – April 1, 2007 - Baltimore, Maryland had to say about their visit to the Conferences Vendor Exhibition floor.

In a brief tour of the vendor exhibits I looked at a new type of microfilm viewer / scanner from e-Image Data. This was a very impressive machine, sending the image directly to a PC monitor prior to scanning. For more information, see this web site @ The ScanPro1000 / ScanPro1000 - Scanner, digitiser - digitizer, Imager - to - PC Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer Scanner, for all microform formats.

March 2007 - Digital Microfilm Equipment – DME wishes to bring to your attention a news bulletin from the San Francisco Bay Area ABC 7 KGO TV/DT Station covering San Francisco, Oakland & San Jose. In a news bulletin that went to air on 11th March 2007 entitled - Book Scanning Goes High-Tech - ABC 7 KGO TV/DT states that "Almost overnight, the Bay Area has become the center of yet another new technology business: book scanning. At dozens of locations from Richmond to Palo Alto, thousands of books are being converted to computer files 24 hours a day -- thousands each week. While publishers fear it, librarians cheer it -- as the next step in card catalogs". A quarter of a million books have been digitized in the USA and Canada -- the majority this year, and the majority from libraries. Every week, Google alone hauls whole shelves of them to an undisclosed location. The top librarians love it, because it's all about the search. What Google won't help you find is the contraption they use to do that scanning. To see one, you have to come to an ex- military base located in San Francisco's Presidio, to the Internet Archive. The spokesperson from the Internet Archive states that "high resolution digital cameras can actually be faster than standard scanners". The Internet Archive book scanner units have two cameras pointed at our test pages, and with the click of a mouse, you can scan them both in the blink of an eye." The Internet Archive has a dozen of these book scanner units running, almost 24 hours a day, at 5,000 books per month, as a public service. Brewster Kahle, Internet Archive: "The big picture is we've got the opportunity to do something of historic proportions, which is universal access to all published works - all books, all music, all video. Some of it will be for free, some of it will be for pay." All of which is compelling libraries to reinvent themselves. The news article by ABC 7 KGO TV/DT is available online with a short video showing the Book Scanners at the Internet Archive. To view the news article you may care to visit @ Book Scanning Goes High-Tech. For more information you may care to visit the Internet Archive which offers online access to books, movies, videos, music at no cost. The Internet Archive currently has 85 billion web pages archived. The Internet Archive main website is located @ Internet Archive.

October - 2006 - ARMA 2006 - San Antonio, Texas. Microfilm was a leading light on the Exhibition floor at ARMA 2006.

Who was at the Show?

One notable exception was Konica Minolta who did not have a stand on the Exhibition floor at ARMA 2006 showing off their range of digital microfilm reader scanner, digitiser - digitizer, Imager / printer range. & the second was Kodak who were on the Exhibition Floor with their imaging and other products including the Archive Writer model 9600 but to my observation no digital microfilm reader scanner, digitiser - digitizer, Imager / printer micrographic products were exhibited so Kodak’s micrographics division were obvious by their absence.

The microfilm manufactures and distributors who were present on the ARMA 2006 Exhibition floor were as follows [in Alphabetical sequence].

As you can see from the above list of exhibitors that the announcement of the death of micrographs is highly premature.

September 2006 - CLICK06 - the ALIA 2006 Biennial Conference held at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre from 19 - 22 September 2006 went off with a BANG and now the fun is all over for another two years!

Digital Microfilm Equipment – DME were overwhelmed with the quantity and quality of interest shown in its Digital Microfilm Equipment on display at its stand #62 on the Exhibition floor at CLICK06. With in excess of seven hundred [700] delegates plus daily exhibition attendees we found ourselves at times overwhelmed with visitors to our stand with the great amount of interest shown by librarians in the ST Imaging model ST200 Digital Microfilm Viewer & Scanner, digitiser - digitizer, Imager complete with the MOCA Microfiche and Opaque Card Attachment. The ST200 along with the Staude Multi-FLY [sometimes referred to as the MULTI FLY or Multifly] unit which is an automatic microfiche & jacket (with 16 or 35 mm microfilm inserted or combination 16 / 35 mm jackets) carrier for Canon, Kodak & Konica-Minolta previously Minolta microfilm Reader / Printer Scanners, Digitisers - Digitizers, Imagers caused attendees to halt in their tracks and those persons attending our stand were amazed at the speed and quality of digital output exhibited by these two products. DME also had the ScanPro model 300 Digital Microfilm Scanner, digitiser - digitizer, Imager / Printer on display which drew a high level of interest from the parties visiting our booth. DME was located at Booth # 62 which was at the entrance to the Exhibition area which allowed potential clients to be aware of our presence and for current and long established clients to renew acquaintances with us during their attendance at CLICK06.

Digital Microfilm Equipment – DME wishes to thank ALIA for staging such a successful event and we also wish to thank all of the attendees who took the advantage of our presence to visit our stand. We also wish to thank all of our established clients who visited us to renew old acquaintances.

Digital Microfilm Equipment – DME looks forward to participating in the next event to be staged in 2008, Dreaming08, the 2008 ALIA Biennial Conference in Alice Springs, Northern Territory. We look forward to being on the Exhibition floor once again in 2008. We look forward to meeting new potential clients and to catch up with current and continuing users of our Digital Microfilm Equipment products.

These machines operate somewhat like the old industrial - scale microfilm cameras the LLMC used for years. They are the machines the LLMC use for Scanning, Digitising, Imaging bound books. As the LLMC's current standard, the LLMC have settled on two models of the same basic machine made by the German company SMA. For most purposes, both at headquarters and at the LLMC remote - Scanning, Digitising, Imaging sites, the LLMC will use the SMA 21 model book Scanner, Digitiser, Imager with throughput of around 300 images - per - hour - IPH, or lower depending on the complexity of targets. By February, the LLMC will own four such machines in operation.

The LLMC has high speed book Scanners, Digitisers, Imagers in operation. These machines operate somewhat like high - end Xerox copiers, Scanning, Digitising, Imaging target pages on both sides in one pass. These Scanners, Digitisers, Imagers can scan only loose leaf document materials which are fed through as single or double sided loose sheets of paper. The LLMC have chosen a model made by another German company called Staude. At present the LLMC have two of these machines the Staude HQ Autoscan unit with a throughput of roughly 3,500 images - per - hour - IPH for materials of average complexity. These machines are the workhorses of the LLMC production operation, upon which the LLMC mainly depend for meeting its announced production goals.

The LLMC has Step - and - repeat book Scanners, Digitisers, Imagers in production use. These machines operate somewhat like the old industrial - scale microfilm cameras that the LLMC used for years. These are the machines the LLMC use for Scanning, Digitising, Imaging bound books. As the current standard, the LLMC have settled on two models of the same basic machine made by the German company SMA. For most purposes, both at headquarters and at the remote - Scanning, Digitising, Imaging sites, the LLMC will use the SMA 21 book model Scanner, Digitiser, Imager rated at around 300 images - per - hour, IPH, or lower depending on the complexity of target material. By February 2006, the LLMC will own four such machines. At the LLMC request, SMA also is developing a backup "90 - degree Scanner, Digitiser, Imager” with a throughput of something less than 300 images - per - hour - IPH due to presumed complexity of material. The SMA 49 model book Scanner, Digitiser, Imager is being designed to scan books so delicate that they cannot be opened more than part way. The LLMC have inspected and approved the prototype, and the production model will be ready early in 2006. The SMA 49 model book Scanner, Digitiser, Imager will be rotated among the LLMC various Scanning, Digitising, Imaging sites as needed. A final nicety in the step - and - repeat area is a special cradle for holding very oversized books during Scanning, Digitising, and Imaging. The LLMC have purchased one such unit, which, like the SMA 49 model book Scanner, Digitiser, Imager, will be rotated among sites as needed.

The LLMC has a Digital - to - Fiche Image Writer installed. This system enables the LLMC to fulfil its vow to back up all of the LLMC digital images with analogue versions on preservation -quality, silver - halide film. The system, called, DigiFiche, is also made by Staude. The system utilizes an in - line processor and closed - loop chemical circulation to permit the production of laboratory - certified, preservation - quality microfiche two minutes after each separate fiche is “written” from the LLMC digital data. These pristine master copies are used only once, to create an intermediate working master. They then are shipped off for permanent archival storage in the Harvard Depository. The intermediate working master is used to produce diazo fiche to fulfil any orders LLMC may receive for consumer copies. At this time LLMC owns only one DigiFiche system. Meeting projected production requirements will require an additional system, scheduled for purchase in mid - 2006.

The Law Library Microform Consortium - LLMC is giving away two Zeutschel Omniscan 5000 model book Scanners, Digitisers, Imagers at zero cost:

As mentioned previously, the LLMC - Digital's first equipment expense was for two step - and - repeat book Scanners, Digitisers, Imagers the Zeutschel Omniscan 5000 model. At the time of the LLMC purchase the Omniscan 5000 was widely regarded as the best industrial - scale book Scanner, Digitiser, Imager available in North America. The Zeutschel Omniscan 5000 model remains the best selling machine in the country. However, as described earlier in this newsletter, the LLMC soon discovered in Europe a new machine - the SMA 21 model book Scanner, Digitiser, Imager described above, never exhibited in North America, which more closely met the LLMC actual needs, and which, in the LLMC context, lowered the LLMC costs substantially. This explains why the LLMC have decided to standardize the LLMC operations around the SMA 21 model Book Scanner, Digitiser, Imager, and why the LLMC now have two surplus, and almost - new Zeutschel Scanner, Digitiser, Imager available to a good home/s.

The LLMC have tried to sell off these Zeutschel Omniscan 5000 model Scanners, Digitisers, Imagers at half price without success, but the LLMC soon discovered that there is almost no market for this type of used equipment. The LLMC were further handicapped by the LLMC's feeling that this equipment is not neophyte - friendly technology, and thus probably not appropriate for institutions with no previous Scanning, Digitising, and Imaging experience. The LLMC have come to the conclusion that the ideal placement of the two Zeutschel Omniscan 5000 units would be with an institution which already owns an Omniscan 5000, and has mastered the complexities of integrating one of the Zeutschel Omniscan 5000 units into a production context, and could use an additional machine to augment the volume of it’s Scanning, Digitising, Imaging operations.

  • February 2005 - New from ST Imaging for 2005!

The ST200 Digital Microfilm Viewers and Reader / Printer Scanners, Digitisers, Imagers - which are the digital alternative to the now obsolete analogue reader / printer - is now supplied with increased power, ease of use, and functionality. All new units delivered in 2005 will have these additional features and benefits:

Mirror Image Viewing Function - no need to place the roll of microfilm on the spindle in any particular way. The client can place the roll of microfilm on the unit upside down and the ST200 will compensate for this error and make the image right reading. If the image appears reversed the Mirror Image feature will align it properly for viewing.

Double the Zoom Range - the lens power has been doubled to allow for the viewing and capture of images that are at a range from 1X to 48X magnification ( the prior range was 1X to 24X magnification ) NOTE: Still no lenses to change, the ST200 is provided with one in-built zoom lens with a magnification range from 1 to 48 X.

In contrast the Canon models MS300, MS350, MS400, MS500 and MS800, & the Konica-Minolta models MS2000, SP2000, MS3000, SP3000, MS6000 and MS7000, & the Kodak models ABR 2400 DSV and the ABR 3000 DSV Digital Microfilm Reader / Printer Scanners, Digitisers, Imagers - which are the digital alternative to the now obsolete analogue reader / printer - all require a minimum of two or more ( usually 3 or 4 ) zoom lenses to cover the range of magnification provided by the ST200 with its 1X to 48X capability. The ST200 is revolutionary in its range of magnification coverage with its single in-built zoom lens in comparison to the multiple zoom lens change requirements of the Canon, Konica-Minolta & Kodak micrographic Reader / Printer Scanners, Digitisers, Imagers - which are the digital alternative to the now obsolete analogue reader / printer. No extra lenses to buy, store, lock away and manage, or have stolen by errant clients. Life in the Library - Public, Special Purpose, University & Reference microfilm environment only gets easier and smarter!

ST Snapshot Software - a quick and easy way to capture the image that is on the viewing monitor. The monitor image is a lower resolution image than the maximum 2,700 DPI available from the ST200 dedicated roll microfilm Scanner, Digitiser, Imager unit - which are the digital alternative to the now obsolete analogue reader / printer ( for use by power users ). If the image is readable on the viewing monitor ( be it a 21" = over A3 in image size ), 19" or 17" inch in size ) it only takes 8 seconds to scan and save, or send directly to the A3 or A4 output laser printer.
