2010 - AUGUST - Massachusetts Historical Society - Boston, Massachusetts - MHS News
ScanPro 2000: Not Your Mother's Microfilm Machine
The MHS recently acquired an exciting new piece of hardware through a grant from the Ruby W. and LaVon P. Linn Foundation: the ScanPro 2000, a compact microfilm viewer, scanner, and printer. Fundraising efforts led by MHS Fellow Frederic D. Grant resulted in the generous gifts of four donors and one charitable trust that have enabled the MHS to order two additional machines, which we expect to receive this fall. Light years ahead of the older, analog machines currently used at the MHS, the ScanPro, and its accompanying PowerScan software, will make the MHS collections more accessible to researchers.
The enhanced features include superior printing, digital scanning, image editing, and incredible zoom capabilities that create a much more user friendly, and potentially more fruitful, research trip to the library. The library staff was very impressed during the first demonstration of the machine when a microfilm reel containing pre-Revolutionary War diaries with dark images not legible on other machines was quickly adjusted to create clear, readable images.
The most extraordinary feature of the ScanPro is the printing and scanning capability. With a single mouse click the machine creates either a print out or a scan of the selected area in just a fraction of a second. The scans can be loaded onto a flash drive and brought home, or e-mailed directly from the work station to a personal e-mail account. The quality of the printouts and scanned images is vastly superior to the quality of the printouts provided on our non-digital machines.
In order to create such beautiful scans, the ScanPro allows researchers to edit the individual frames of the microfilm by cropping and rotating and adjusting the brightness and contrast of the images. The spot editing feature allows researchers to enhance a selected area of a frame, adjusting the brightness and contrast of a particularly dark spot to make a cohesive, legible image. This is particularly helpful for newspaper images, where the illustrative matter tends to be much darker on microfilm than the text. Finally, the powerful zoom feature allows researchers to see things in the microfilm that can barely be seen in the original document.
The ScanPro 2000 is currently available for use in the MHS library. Researchers that cannot visit the library can request digital files to be e-mailed to them by the library staff. Please see details at under low resolution digital files.

2010 - AUGUST - What some Local Family Historians and Genealogists plus other Researchers at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) located at 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20740-6001 in the National Capital in Washington DC are saying.
Based on completed surveys, researchers prefer the e-Image Data’s - ScanPro2000 / ScanPro 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer to that of the S-T Imaging’s ST ViewScan.
Of the 14 survey responses received from researchers on the e-Image Data’s - ScanPro2000 all but one was positive. NOTE: This equates to a 93% vote by the respondents in favour of the Features, Benefits & Capabilities provided by the e-Image Data’s - ScanPro2000.
Researchers acknowledged that the machine takes time to learn but they really liked using the machine once they understood the program.
The “Spot-Edit” function was a hit with both staff and researchers. The only downside is the lack of an “Undo” function.
Unfortunately, we did not get many surveys back for the ST ViewScan. Researchers agreed that the machine was good,One researcher, who used the ST ViewScan machine for about a week, told us that the machine would freeze and she would lose all of her scanned images.
We also had a problem saving images with the ST ViewScan machine, but that was fixed by saving the images as a different file type.
2010 - JULY - What some Local Family Historians and Genealogists in North America are saying on the internet about the e-Image Data ScanPro model 2000 / ScanPro2000 / ScanPro 2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer.

These ScanPro2000's are really great machines. The Family History Library at Brigham Young University has several of these Scanpro2000's and they seem to be in constant use. I actually never use regular readers when I visit that library because these newer Scanpro2000 machines are so much easier to view with and quickly copy from.

The ScanPro 2000 is fantastic. With difficult to read microfilm, the software automatically clears up everything, so that the image is like new. The best device to help with bad images to come along ever. I am seriously thinking of purchasing one very soon.

When our new library was built three or four years ago, the genealogy department put in six of the ScanPro1000's and I love them! I scan to a jump drive to take home. If I forget that, I can still save them and then e-mail them to myself. You can usually read a document that on a regular reader was too dark to see page numbers, etc. and adjust so they are visible. I noticed, when I was there, that our new OGS library has a couple.

The software capabilities with this ScanPro2000 scanner are amazing. At the Family History Library in Salt Lake City there are at least 12 of the ScanPro2000's on the second floor alone. I had one page of a microfilm that had a very dark area covering about 20% of the page. The software allows you to highlight that area and change the contrast without affecting the rest of the page. Also, if the page is not straight you can easily adjust it in very small increments. There is not enough space here to adequately describe all of the capabilities of this software.

Louisiana State University - LSU - Hill Memorial Library (Baton Rouge, LA) has the remote feature on the ScanPro2000. Recently I was there researching old microfilmed newspapers. I still had one microfilm roll to go when I ran out of time. When I returned home to Washington DC I called to reserve the machine at LSU. They racked up the film I needed to consult, and then, for $20 I had the use of the machine from 5 PM (when the library closed) until 9 AM the next morning (when it re-opened). During that time (when it would have gone unused) I accessed the machine and the film via the Internet! Amazing!!!!! Why don't other research facilities offer this technology?

Oh happy day! Know what you are looking for on a date or page, find, but scanning page after page is not fun for this old guy who has trifocals. To read a monitor mounted on a holder above the scanPro2000 it doesn't take long for the old neck to tell you to hurry up.
Never touch the ScanPro2000 again is wrong when the image must be scanned top to bottom or left to right. For looking at page after page it is better to use your two hands on the reels to turn manually to the next page. Then push and pull the carriage in and out for top to bottom scanning.
Oh yes it would be best to have a 30 inch monitor in a vertical position also. Oh how I wish that parts were available to fix for the old overhead projected readers. :-)

We used these wonderful ScanPro2000 devices this year at the Family History Library in Salt Lake. It took a bit to learn the interface and tools but they worked wonderfully and as another reader stated, the ability to adjust your images right on the spot before printing or saving to a flash drive was great. Saves a lot of time so you don't have to do it all at home with just a paper print out to work from. A great addition to the FHL. The You Go Genealogy Girls: Cheri and Ruby

I used the ScanPro 2000 for the first time this spring at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, and found it to be amazing! I would absolutely LOVE to have one in my public library, but with the economy as it is, that isn't feasible. Does anyone know of a grant program that might cover the purchase of this marvel?

My local library purchased one of these ScanPro2000'S last year and it does an amazing job! Not to mention that my library doesn't charge any fees for using it or for scans, it's saved me quite a bit of money to use rather then using the older microfilm copiers.
It saves time in that it scans very fast and I also don't have to scan the copies I've made once I get home.
I've tried it out on photos in the newspapers, and depending on the quality of the newspaper, it will usually do a very fine job! as people have mentioned above, it does wonders with scanning a quality image from a not-so-great original. I wish every repository and archive that has microfilm would purchase one of these ScanPro20000's.

I had reported early last year that the Archives of Ontario had equipped their new library on the York University campus with SEVENTY FOUR [74] ScanPro 2000's (they just added an additional ScanPro 2000 bringing the total to SEVENTY FIVE [75] units).
I have had an opportunity to use those scanners and they are amazing. They are fast, easy to use and the powerful software controls makes it easy to complete look-ups quickly.
Genealogy groups rent buses to go there and use the equipment and the controls on the ScanPro are so intuitive those researchers just sit down and start using the equipment with little or no instruction.

I have used the ST Imaging ST200X that Jim is referring to and it was not even close to the performance of the ScanPro 2000.
It took more than 1 minute to scan an image vs. 1 second for the ScanPro 2000 and the end result was of lower quality.
I am quite certain that the actual document resolution is not the 3600 dpi that the manufacturer ST Imaging claims.
To get started there were 5 switches that needed to be turned on.
With significant frustration and help I did finally get it up and running. Once running, I had to switch back and forth from view mode to computer mode before a scan could be made.
This switching back and forth is very confusing and slows microfilm genealogy research to a point even slower than the old reader / printers.
Scans of a newspaper made directly to the SD card, with the exception of the headlines, were unreadable.
I understand that e-ImageData, the manufacturer of the ScanPro 2000, will provide a trade in allowance for those unfortunate souls who purchased the ST200X.

The Wisconsin Historical Society owns six [6] Scan Pro 2000s. We are ordering two [2] more ScanPro2000'S in the next month. We find this equipment to be the most reliable and user friendly microfilm scanners available on the market to date.
These ScanPro2000 scanners are used every hour of every day by genealogists, visiting scholars, University of Wisconsin Madison staff and students as well as local historians and other researchers.
Visitors have always come to us for our collections in North American history but now they also come because we have equipment that allows them to save their work in digital format or print easily.
E-Image Data staff has always been helpful.
We tested the ST Imaging model ST200X and Minolta scanners at the same time as the Scan Pro 2000. It was a unanimous vote for the Scan Pro 2000 between staff and volunteers.

2009 - November - A Man of Many Talents - Peter Collins

Revolutionary Access to Research Material
A new feather in the cap of Garrison Communications came this year when it was appointed an Authorised Agent in the Greater Brisbane Metropolitan Area for e-Image Data's ScanPro 2000 digital micrographic reader / viewer, scanner, printer. Peter believes these devices have the potential to revolutionise access to under - used research material locked away inside the microfiche and microfilm sections of the world's public libraries and genealogical society archives, especially local newspapers and parish registers.
Peter says, “The ScanPro 2000 is a portable, multi-tasking technology capable of giving individuals or teams of collaborating researchers a tool to unlock vast categories of microforms including shipping lists, monumental inscriptions, maps and ephemera – and turn it all into the language of the 21st Century: Digital. Once freed from its microform prison, digitised data can be readily inspected, collated, manipulated into indexes and then distributed to other researchers.
“Digitisation undoubtedly is exponentially democratising for genealogical and local history research; and volunteer - run organisations everywhere are beginning to discover the commercial opportunities presented by indexing material that has, for centuries, proven too unwieldy, obscure or otherwise impractical for historians to critically analyse. This is the most exciting development in genealogy since the invention of the personal computer – and you can quote me!”
2009 - November - Digital Microfilm Equipment - DME is pleased to announce the release of the most economical version of the ScanPro2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer for those organisations who have a large holding of Microfiche, Jackets & or Aperture Cards but with only a small holding of 16 / 35 mm Roll Microfilm. The ScanPro2000 Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer combined with the Manual 16 / 35 mm Roll Microfilm Carrier the UCC150 (image shown below) will provide organisations with the most economical option for the Reading / Viewing / Scanning & or Printing of their microform collection irrespective of format. The release of this lowest cost, highest functionality Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer the ScanPro2000 combined with the Manual 16 / 35 mm Roll Microfilm Carrier the UCC150, will allow more organisations with limited budgets the opportunity to install the most up to date Digital Microfilm Reader / Viewer / Scanner / Printer available anywhere worldwide.

HARTFORD, Wis. – e-Image Data debuted the beta version of its new WORD-Search™, technology at the American Library Association convention in Chicago in July. A new function for the popular ScanPro 2000, WORD-Search™ allows users to find selected words on any type of microform.
WORD-Search™, is the first software of its type to be developed for searching topics within microfilm documents. The ScanPro 2000 first scans the microfilm image viewed on the screen then analyses the scan for word matches.
“The user enters the key words for the microfilm image of interest and clicks the WORD-Search™ button,” says James Westoby, president, e-Image Data. “The software then highlights any matches for the specified words, similar to the way Microsoft Word’s “find” function does for Word documents.” The final result is the complete microfilm image on the viewing screen displaying the word matches.
“The ScanPro 2000 is widely used by libraries and researchers across the world and WORD-Search™ was developed as a response to customer feedback,” says Westoby. “Our customers can now easily search and locate birth, obituary, and marriage records as well as newspaper articles stored on microfilm.”
Millions of valuable documents, including rare source materials and government documents stored on microfilm, exist in libraries throughout the world. Librarians who tried the beta version of WORD-Search™ at the ALA show were excited about the possibilities.
“The university librarians that we talked with at ALA were very enthusiastic about WORD-Search™” says Westoby. “Students could use the WORD-Search™ function for their research and would no longer have to read the entire page to find relevant entries. It will reduce enormously the amount of time they need to spend going through microfilm documents and also free up the machines for other users.”
WORD-Search™ also has the potential to be used by educators and libraries to locate and select content on microfilm to be made available online. “This software could revolutionize the way microfilm is used for research”, says Westoby. “It will open the door for a whole new level of accessibility and information sharing.”
E-Image Data received excellent feedback on the beta version of the software from the ALA attendees and we are refining its features in anticipation of a product launch before the end of the year. WORD-Search™ works with any ScanPro 2000.
Pre-launch orders will be accepted beginning November 23.

I was overwhelmed at the view but was unable to obtain permission to take a photograph of the installation.
As stated, the Alexander Fraser Microfilm Reading Room is called the Rotunda & is a massive round room with only microfilm equipment located on every desk, side by side.

With the SMA32 which has a similar physical makeup to the SMA21 - Showing laser lines indicate scanning range even before pre-scan is made. As the book cradle can be turned 90° it is also possible to digitize originals up to A1 by making two seperate scans. Very cost effective if the majority of your originals is A2.
With the SMA32 which has a similar physical makeup to the SMA21 - Showint the book cradle, which is a standard feature, minimizes the curvature for books up to 300 mm thickness. Also, the book cradle can be moved left and right to center the book. If it is required to scan documents only, a special plate covers the book cradle.>

Know in the micrographic end user community as the Reliable One: The ScanPro 1000's illumination exposure lamp assembly is now warranted for the life of the scanner & thus eliminating another ongoing cost of ownership for microfilm equipment. This life of the scanner warranty on the ScanPro1000'S illumination exposure lamp assembly is an industry first for microfilm equipment. The need to replace halogen exposure lamps as an ongoing requirement in the older BIG IRON - Canon, Minolta & Kodak style of microfilm equipment over the life of a unit can amount to many hundreds or even thousands of dollars in ongoing expenditure, not to mention the power utilised and the high heat load produced by halogen lamps which with some film type can wipe out the data if the film is left in the film gate for a long period of time, plus the downtime on the equipment when the exposure lamps burn out & thus the need for local staff involvement to replace the lamp.
To check all of the features available with the release of the latest version of the ScanPro1000 PowerScan Software you may care to review the listing of Icons / Buttons that go to make life extremely easy for the end user operator - irrespective of their level of capability - to drive the ScanPro1000 in any micrographic environment.
